This stop motion animation is another example of how SMA is popular in DIY environments. What I like about this particular video is that clever use of post it notes. IT also tells a bit of a story. I also find it a little long at points. I wonder if the artifacting, the lines that I see at times in the screen was on purpose or if it was a mistake in exporting. I think the concept could make a great opener or title sequence for a video at school. |

On Friday May 30, 2014 our class watched two visual essays about the Long Game (see previous blog post) at the same time as as class at Cameron Heights Secondary School. During the viewing, students tweeted out "tweets of value". My working definition of a tweet of value is: After watching and tweeting, I asked students to sign up forStorify, an app that can pull feeds from Twitter, Facebook and other social media applications. In this case, the purpose of Storify was to archive tweets from our backchannel experience.
The overall purpose of the activity was to explore how technology can shape our society by participating in an online conversation with other students at a different school. Although some may see Twitter as a frivolous social media app, I would like my students to explore the use of Twitter as a personal learning network that can also include conversations and debates. For those who missed it, here are the instructions: 1. Select at least 10 tweets that are worth archiving. You can include your own. 2. You can add commentary to the tweets. The commentary is particularly useful if you want to explain your disagreement or disappointment with a tweet. 3. Publish the story and embed it into your personal portfolio. I am away today sharing teaching practices with other teachers. I am back tomorrow. For today: EVERYONE needs to watch and think about this 2 part Visual Essay. I like it because it talks about the importance of "The Long Game" but it also connects to ideas of how marketing shapes our perspective, how technology could change the essay and the importance of research and citing your sources. Feel free to watch it in small groups and discuss it afterwards. The rest of your time is to work on the projects you need too. Unfortunately, I won't be available through Twitter until 11am. Tomorrow I will ask you to share how you organized yourself. SPECIFICS: Jesse - See if you can finish up with Cosmin and Kaity Callum - you are out tomorrow with music. Should we reschedule the meeting for Thursday? CD Production Group - I look forward to hear about your thinking. Check out the message in the video but here are some links:
