I am way at a meeting today. This makes an excellent chance for you to review some of these resources and how it might influence your ideas of design. In order to hold on to your thinking, you may want to take notes. I will introduce a key idea or question before each one to direct your thinking: Layout and Design This is a basic introduction to design fundamentals. It uses slightly different terminology then what you were presented yesterday. You will find that terminology can shift depending on culture, country or perspective. Don't let that confuse you. Try to connect the dots between like terms and wonder how a word captures something slightly different. This video is geared at the student designer. Question to Consider: How would you changes your own diagnostic designs, after watching this video? This video is produced by the Lynda.com series - a series of media tutorials. They unlock some of their videos to get a sense of the course. PAY ATTENTION TO: Parts of a letter and terminology. This video documents the creation of a typeface. QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What would you design a font out of from around your home that could be digitized? CAREERS These two Ted Talks give you different perspectives on graphic designer careers. It is a wide and varied career choice. QUESTION: Why does Marian Bantjes call herself a design artist rather than a graphic designer? What freedom does that give her? Click to set custom HTML IMPACT ON SOCIETY Communication Technology has an impact on society. Graphic designers are often employed to help sell stuff. The Story of Stuff articulates how problematic this is. QUESTION: What can we do as designers to solve these problems? FOR THE FUTURE This AdobeTV video is fantastic at capturing the project proposal and pitch process. The grade 12 program is built around this. Each one of you will be developing your own ISU throughout this course. Okay, so I am getting excited. I have just finished a week of student conferences with my grade 12 students, many who are applying to post secondary programs related to communications technology. And now I have a class of 30 keen communication students coming in tomorrow.
This semester will bring some significant changes to the program that I believe will make it more authentic and real. Here are some of things to expect: All morning shows will be produced by the TGJ 3MI / TGJ 4MI crew In the next two days, I need to get everyone trained on basic voice production and reading on air. As well, everyone needs to be able to operate Adobe Audition and the soundboard. We also need to talk copyright, 5 Minute Songs, Captive Audiences and mic etiquette. Our first broadcast is Friday morning. We have a beta version of a YouTube channel up and going But now we need to produce segments on a regular basis. This means the class will very quickly be learning the basics of video production and editing. I have never brought in video production as quickly as this year. Will it be too quick? We will find out. Action Research in the Classroom This semester I will be collaborating with my students in building the modules for different parts of the course. This means I will be asking them to research, explain and teach each other the technical terms and processes. My job will be to coach, give context and make sure the quality is appropriate for a grade 11/12 class. Participating in App Creation We will be a test group for an App being developed out of the Communitech Hub. More on that soon Relay For Life & Other School Projects Our school is putting on Relay For Life this semester. We have already been asked to provide the documentary crew and live broadcasting. This will be huge focus of the semester. So with all this in store, I am nervous, excited, pumped and ready to work hard. But as I am the teacher, I also expect my students to work twice as hard as me. Fingers crossed that they are ready. What can 33 students |
