Okay, so I am getting excited. I have just finished a week of student conferences with my grade 12 students, many who are applying to post secondary programs related to communications technology. And now I have a class of 30 keen communication students coming in tomorrow.
This semester will bring some significant changes to the program that I believe will make it more authentic and real. Here are some of things to expect: All morning shows will be produced by the TGJ 3MI / TGJ 4MI crew In the next two days, I need to get everyone trained on basic voice production and reading on air. As well, everyone needs to be able to operate Adobe Audition and the soundboard. We also need to talk copyright, 5 Minute Songs, Captive Audiences and mic etiquette. Our first broadcast is Friday morning. We have a beta version of a YouTube channel up and going But now we need to produce segments on a regular basis. This means the class will very quickly be learning the basics of video production and editing. I have never brought in video production as quickly as this year. Will it be too quick? We will find out. Action Research in the Classroom This semester I will be collaborating with my students in building the modules for different parts of the course. This means I will be asking them to research, explain and teach each other the technical terms and processes. My job will be to coach, give context and make sure the quality is appropriate for a grade 11/12 class. Participating in App Creation We will be a test group for an App being developed out of the Communitech Hub. More on that soon Relay For Life & Other School Projects Our school is putting on Relay For Life this semester. We have already been asked to provide the documentary crew and live broadcasting. This will be huge focus of the semester. So with all this in store, I am nervous, excited, pumped and ready to work hard. But as I am the teacher, I also expect my students to work twice as hard as me. Fingers crossed that they are ready. What can 33 students

TGJ 4MI
This is a work period to help you get your ISU done. Rough Drafts and technical reports are being presented this coming Monday. Polished projects are due at the end of the week. If you need to sign out equipment, it is for the period only. If this is a problem, tweet me. TGJ 2OI Congratulations! You classmates R & J convinced me to let you watch Inception. However you need to do some research first. 1. Please get your sketch books and find 3 interesting facts about the director Christopher Nolan. Make sure the 3 facts are interesting to you. Here is a good website to start with: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0634240/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm 2. Once you have 3 facts listed, please have supply teacher initial. Once the class is done, Inception begins. Sit close enough to see. 3. Emma, Tarin - you have both requested more time for the Flash project. You can choose to work on it now if you like. Anyone else that want's to be considered for this can ask the teacher. TGJ 3OI / ASM 3OI I will be posting a google form to let me know what you are working on during this period:https://docs.google.com/a/googleapps.wrdsb.ca/forms/d/1hqDQ3EifPuhB8GN9wgYRijNpY7FesJjq-2PG3tsqnUw/viewform You can sign out equipment. You can work in the halls but need a film permit. If you need to to work in the library, please ask Mrs. Taylor nicely for the computers. If in doubt, tweet me, message me, email me. Ms. Doelman Hi Broadcasting Students!
I am about to go present so I am little rushed for time. Thanks to those that tweeted me and showed me that they read yesterday's notes. I favourited your tweets and should have followed you back. If you are choosing Facebook I will look at that this weekend. Here are the things I would like you to do today: FIRST 10 MINUTES Spend 10-15 minutes looking at the news and tweet or facebook out 2 stories that you think other students should know about. You can work together. Please share a balance of stories so not all serious and not all entertainment. REST OF PERIOD Research and come up with written down ideas of how we should conquer the challenges. Read yesterday's post. My hope is that when I come back on Monday you can tell me what we should do differently so we don't have problems. Please consider your greatest challenge...ME! How do you keep your teacher organized so she never locks down equipment every again. How do you make sure I don't shoulder all the responsibility because I can't keep up...I am going a little crazy which only slows you down. I can't wait to hear your answers. I miss being in class and feel so lucky I get to be your teacher. Have a happy and safe weekend...but Equipment Policy: Group 1: Steph, Sabrina, Zach and Alex Group 2: Omar, Jesse, Brayden Copyright Policy: Group 1: Farah, Sara, Vlada, Janeen Group 2: Ubaid, Nathan, Hassan Resources We Need to Develop so it is easy to shoot and easy to edit: Group 1: Sarah, Josh, Aletia, Robin Group 2: Jonathan, Nick, Eric Community Standards and Goal: Group 1: Jana, Greg, Jordan Music Development: Andrew, Josh L TGJ 4MI
Okay! Here is the deal. Through out two of my classes, a couple equipment infractions have happened. Paired up with a change in coverage plans, I needed to lock down equipment. So as a result, no equipment…no matter what…will be released over the next two days. If this is a huge problem you need to contact me through Twitter. Otherwise, you have lots to do to get your Large Group Project reflection and a draft of your Technical Report Drafted. If you are on the Facebook group, please take a look. On another positive note, a beta version SJAM Highlander YouTube Channel has been launched. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC91YKP50cQ5NuJo0iQdmmRQ Check out our Double We need channel art. We need tags. We need to spice it up. And if you have ideas and want to help please let me know your ideas. This is new territory for me so I need your guidance. Have a great Thursday and Friday and you can always contact me through Twitter! TGJ 2OI Fearless Grade 10s! I was no happy with how Illustrator was going. It wasn't you but the feeling like I needed to change it up. So today, you will be watching some of Juno as well as filling out an observation sheet. This marks a transition to start looking at the language and production of film and video. I will be looking at the group sheet to get a sense of what you already know about the language of film and what meaning you make from it. If you have a chance, ask the supply teacher to look at the Juno Screenplay. I left the copy on my desk. Flip through and get a sense of what a script looks like. If you have any concerns, please contact me through Twitter. BROADCASTING We are on hold! The only students who are not working on this blog are Andrew and Josh L. No tele promoter work. So broadcasting students! I am so pleased with our progress. I am delighted! I am proud! I can't wait for more. But I need to put on the brakes. We have some challenges that we need to overcome. I need your help and your ideas to overcome it. So let me lay them out: Challenges: # 1 Equipment: I found equipment scattered throughout our area yesterday that was no returned and was used by our class. Audio recorders, cords, USB sticks, SD cards, etc ,etc etc. I am also missing a mic. I am not saying that it has been stolen but I think it might be misplaced. It may or may not be our class but we need to figure out protocol in light of what happened yesterday. # 2 Community Standards I need to pull a video yesterday from our channel because I didn't properly check it (my fault) and it didn't adhere to the implicitly community standards of our school. Before we make a mistake that may cost us our channel, we need to have a solid and open conversation about what is in the educational box and what is out of the box. #3 Copyright So I am old. I am not hip. But I want to get us on board with copyright because it is going to have an impact on our work. We need to come up with what is in and what is out with copyright. #4 Getting Better at What We Do We need to start looking critically at our footage and figuring out the skills we need to build within our group. I have some ideas but more on this soon. So to conquer these challenges I am going to ask you do some research. Please go to this google doc and follow the instructions: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SialDL7acJ7Wv1U6NR2LlwwjWXQy7JMqKJSKERiHt98/edit?usp=sharing PERIOD A: TGJ 4MI
This is the week for you to focus on the making of your ISU and "get'er done." I will be looking for an update by the end of this week. Make sure you log your work. Rough Draft (80% done) + the technical report will be due next week. The final draft will due 3-4 days after your present your rough draft. This will all be in time for your mid term report. As mentioned on Friday, you will be working on a reflection assignment for Large Group Project that will be due in a week. I will present this tomorrow as I need to look after some sick family members today. If you need equipment to sign out for today, you need to tweet me (@adoelman) or facebook me before I allow the supply teacher to sign it out. Or I might just drop in. PERIOD B: TGJ 2OI This will be one of your final periods to work on an "Independent Learning Project". I realize that some of you will want more time and will need to come in during lunch for additional time. We will talk about the hard deadline tomorrow. Here some things to make sure you have done so you are ready to write your report and hand in your work:
In your written report, I will be asking for the following. If you are done, you can start drafting your answers for some of these questions:
I will go through these questions tomorrow. PERIOD D BROADCASTING Students will be working to get Double Blue Day footage and edited and posted. I will be in at the beginning of class to get things organized. Dear Classes -
I am away today. I hate being away but it will happen over the course of the semester. This year I am going to try posting my lesson plans to you so you can get a sense of what I am looking for. If you come up against technical problems or issues it is always best to contact me through Twitter or through Waterworks email. PERIOD A: TGJ 4MI Pitches and proposals are postponed till tomorrow. Assume that your ideas are accepted and that we will tweak the focus. Start doing your research, planning, creating your 'design bible' or file of resources. No equipment is to be signed out with a supply teacher but you can send me an email requesting equipment. I am also assigning the reading and viewing for this weeks Seminar. It is on the seminar page. It is less work than last week. The focus is looking at representation and in this case representation of women. Please spend some time on the Images of Women page to understand the common techniques of how women are presented in our media. (It looks like MentorMob just went down - let me know if it is not working this morning. I can always tweet out the links I want you to look at). Heads up: We will be our large class projects this week so there will be more to balance with your time so make the most of it. PERIOD B: TGJ 2OI 1) Please download complete the e-hand out "Webhunt for Colour". You can complete it with a partner and save it to your documents. We will take it up tomorrow. It should take about 30 minutes to complete. Please keep track of the sources that you use and use more than just wikipedia. 2) Continue working on your background for an animation in photoshop. Our goal will be to use it to test out animation in another software. Be sure to keep your layers separate. If you are finished your background, I would expect you to go back and revise. Try to change, perfect and polish the background. I will be asking you to submit this for assessment as part of your photoshop portfolio. BROADCASTING - TGJ 3MI / ASM 3OI On Friday, we recorded "streeters" and personal interview about the situation in Syria. Here is your job today. A. Take 5 to 10 minutes to read different news sources about Syria. Consider looking at newspa B. Working on your own using Audacity, edit: 1. a 30 second version of the streeters (you can take out the questions) - save as an .mp3 file with the file structure of lastname_streeter.mp3. For example my file would be called doelman_streeter.mp3. 2. Find what you consider the3 most powerful soundbites of the interview. These soundbites should be 5 - 25 seconds in length. - save as an .mp3 file with the file structure lastname_soundbite2.mp3, lastname_soundbite3.mp3, lastname_soundbite1.mp3, 3. Edit the interview to shorten it to 2 minutes. - save as an.mp3 with the file struture last name_shortinterview.mp3 4. If you get done all this, you can try writing a script that introduces and closes the interview that would be recorded with your voice. We would do the recording tomorrow. |
